about

”[Actor Brought a Vice] is a truly unique and experimental album.” – WBEZ Chicago

"During the summer of 2020 I gave myself permission to do something I always wanted to but never had: wake up and write a song first thing in the morning. As our world faced a pandemic and cultural reckoning, I found myself in the quietude of Oslo, Norway. On the tail end of my own professional crisis, my hopes, dreams, and fears arose in the lyrics and chords that I’d write with a clear head, first thing in the morning.

Upon my return to the US, I scheduled two studio dates with my dear friend and collaborator David Vandervelde at his home studio in Michigan to track demos. Eventually, about a dozen musicians performed on our record, all of whom sent in their parts via email. I gave each musician only the guitar / voice / drum machine versions plus an inspiration dossier that included the creative philosophy of French filmmaker Robert Bresson, John Cage’s In a Landscape, and the then-recently-released-but-previously-lost John Coltrane record Both Directions at Once. They wrote parts without hearing what anyone else in the band was doing. Dave and I sculpted the parts until we arrived at something cohesive and intriguing. We chose our ‘models’ wisely and they led us to sounds unlike any other I’ve heard on record.

I wanted this album to be a paradoxical exercise: recorded quickly but with intention, with community from afar, an open system with parameters to guide the vision; no limitations within the boundaries of our shut-down world. The title reflects the reminder that we’re all playing different parts and we bring our vices wherever we go, and how sometimes our vices, or our negative traits, can be our biggest assets depending on how we use them.” ~Matt

about

Young Man in a Hurry Chicago, Illinois

Young Man in a Hurry reimagines the lo-fi sounds of their 80s and 90s youth, immersing listeners in a postmodern millennial séance.

If you’ve made it this far: YMIAH is a rotating cast of middle-aged people playing indie rock in Chicago. Their story is nothing special, but if you take time to listen, they’re actually pretty good.
