There’s one way to know What the film is about A template for a story of love Built at the end of the world The only words to say Are yes and no Please, thank you It’s time to go Any lengths so far Any lengths so far Trace the dots backwards Grow the plot backwards Describe the clouds With no eyes Heart gold light Internalize Any lengths so far Any lengths so far Trace the dots backwards Grow the plot backwards

ARMCHAIR 03:49
When I came in I knew what the fuck I was doing When I came in I knew what the fuck I was about But you, but you When I came in I didn’t know what the fuck I was doing When I came in I didn’t know what the fuck I was about But you knew, it sliced me like a samurai sword When I came in I thought I knew everything I was doing When I came in I thought I knew exactly what I was about But you sliced me open like Sonny Chiba And lay me in your armchair I’ve always been there, I’ve always been there In your armchair I fit so perfectly it seems When I came in I didn’t know what the hell I was doing When I came in I didn’t know what the hell I about But you knew When you came in you knew exactly what you were doing When you came in you knew exactly what you were about

about

I wrote the chords for these songs over the course of about a week on some cold winter days. They sounded different than others I generally write, so I decided to enlist a new backing band and see what happened. I'd always wanted to make a record live in-studio with Tim Daisy playing drums, so I asked him to play. Same for David Vandervelde. They both said yes.

At the time, I was listening to lots of Black Midi and Neil Young while figuring out how to translate these songs live, in one take, with a band that had never played together. I'd either listened to an interview or came to the conclusion myself that Young's seminal record – AFTER THE GOLD RUSH – translates so beautifully with minimal arrangements. I wanted these songs to be able to exist this way, as instrumental piano songs (in theory), as well as high-intensity drum-heavy songs as well. A full spectrum.

We spent about six hours at Narwhal Music in Chicago with Brian Deck and wrote the arrangements on the fly, maybe 2-3 takes max on each song. While listening to the demos, Deck suggested asking my friend/collaborator Emma Hospelhorn to write the lyrical melodies. We then went to L.A. and had Hope Wright sing Emma's melodies.

For the lyrics, I delved into Wim Wenders' book "The Pixels of Paul Cezanne: And Reflections on Other Artists." Many words I used were from this book. And regarding the album title: If the Replacements could name a record LET IT BE, Wilco ODE TO JOY... then why not AFTER THE GOLD RUSH?

Like much of the music I'd been writing over the last few years... the songs have been made in light of a major personal upheaval that dovetailed with the pandemic. As I move to the other side of these issues... the proverbial creative gold rush shifts into new phases of life.

Onward we go.

about

Young Man in a Hurry Chicago, Illinois

Young Man in a Hurry reimagines the lo-fi sounds of their 80s and 90s youth, immersing listeners in a postmodern millennial séance.

If you’ve made it this far: YMIAH is a rotating cast of middle-aged people playing indie rock in Chicago. Their story is nothing special, but if you take time to listen, they’re actually pretty good.
